"Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang is a hip hop classic. This song really set the tone and paved the way for much of modern rap and hip hop. I think what is so cool about this song is how the pattern established in the song as well as its style, have returned to hip hop today after the genre had branched out in other directions for several years. The smooth flows, light hearted and fun lyrics, as well as the heavily pop influenced beat are staples in much of today's rap and hip hop music.
Something I found interesting about this song compared to many of the other songs we have been listening to, aside from it being one of the first songs we could truly call rap, is the length. At seven minutes long, "Rapper's Delight" is way over twice as long as what we have normally been listening to. This isn't necessarily a bad thing and actually works somewhat in the group's favor. The consistency of the flow and beat allow the song to really sit in your brain and the duration of the song makes it extremely catchy. I had heard this song before, but after some more in depth listening, its definitely one of my new favorites.
What a song! It is cool to look back and think about these songs that have paved the way for other music and artists of the same genre. I find it interesting that it is such a long song but even being so, it is a very unique song. While I am not a huge fan of rap and hip hop in general, I could definitely get behind this song and understand why it was so popular back in the day.
ReplyDeleteHey Ryder, good read! When I was growing up, my dad loved this song and how it paved the way, like you said. Pretty sure I could keep up with the words even younger than 5 with how many times I heard it.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see other folks are liking the old rap!
Hi Ryder!
ReplyDeleteI had never heard this song before but after listening to it i defiantly agree with you that it paved the way for modern rap and hiphop. I will have to say tho that i found it a little bit to long haha! But it is still a very enjoyable song and catchy like you said.
I also choose this song this week to listen to. I think it was really good even though the song was around 6 minutes long. I also think this song is really interesting and unique.
ReplyDeleteYour analysis of this song is really good and very accurate! This song feels so long to me I enjoy it but after about the four minute mark, the song feels so repetitive in my opinion. However, before I get bored of this song I actually enjoy the beat and the rapping.
ReplyDeleteHi Ryder, I agree. This song has definitely paved the way for hip hop in so many ways. I feel like lengthy songs back then were definitely scarce and did set aside the track making it different from any other. I think about music today and 3-5 minutes for a song is still typical.
